Car buying poses a real challenge: The chosen model should not only be aesthetically appealing, but also practical and reliable, ideally over an extended period. Those opting for a new car aim to ensure that their vehicle doesn’t turn into scrap even after 400,000 kilometers.

Some models meet these requirements exceptionally well, whether as brand-new releases or timeless classics in the automotive industry. We meticulously assessed a variety of vehicles and selected 50 models that passed our rigorous test.

Subaru-Forester

For those seeking a rugged all-wheel-drive model, exploring the Subaru Forester is recommended. While alternative engine options exist, the current all-wheel-drive system stands out as the most dependable choice.

Those less concerned with turbocharged performance may consider a naturally aspirated engine, assuring longevity exceeding 400,000 kilometers. It’s crucial to remember: Delaying yields extended driving enjoyment.

VW Passat

The Volkswagen Kombi earns its status as Germany’s preferred midsize car for good reasons. Volkswagen’s global reputation for reliability is well-deserved. Representing family-friendliness, functionality, and reliability, the Kombi’s 1.8-liter turbo engine competes strongly in durability even without a diesel option.

Image: housecoast.com

Its popularity stems from sturdy construction and a reputation for longevity, making it a wise choice for drivers prioritizing quality and dependability. In a world valuing trust and steadfastness, the VW Kombi consistently proves to be a secure option.

Lexus RX350 / 450h

Since 1997, Lexus, Toyota’s premium brand, has been a prominent presence in the market. Introduced in Europe in autumn 2000, the Lexus RX is renowned as a sporty luxury model. Initially marketed in Japan as the Toyota Harrier, the first two generations of the RX had significant success.

Image: i2.milimaj.com/

The latest iteration, the RX350/450h, boasts even more power. Available in both gasoline and hybrid variants, the hybrid model matches the gasoline version in terms of performance. With these attributes, it’s no surprise that Lexus has amassed such a large number of devoted fans.

Honda CR-V

The CR-V, an abbreviation for “Comfortable Runabout Vehicle,” has been in production by the Japanese manufacturer since 1996, now in its fifth generation. Despite its compact size, this SUV maintains enduring popularity, thanks to its versatility and highly durable 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine.

Image: hips.hearstapps.com

Despite potential perceptions of its size as imposing, the CR-V proves to be the perfect choice for those seeking a reliable companion. With a wealth of features and proven longevity, it’s equally well-suited for adventures and everyday journeys.

Lexus ES 350/450

Originally known as the Toyota Windom in Japan, the Lexus ES has long established itself as a popular midsize sedan. If you’re familiar with the Toyota Camry or its sister model, the Toyota Vista, the Lexus ES will feel familiar.

Image: d1tr1z57agf4qv.cloudfront.ne

While its design may seem too simple for some, the ES 350/450 impresses with its exceptional durability. For those less concerned about a powerful engine, this model still offers remarkable robustness that is appreciated.

Toyota Camry

Originally available in a hatchback version, the first generation of the Camry has since been replaced by the wagon model. The name “Camry” translates to “crown,” signifying the shift from rear-wheel drive to front-wheel drive in the midsize class. As a timeless classic, this model is indispensable among enthusiasts of reliable vehicles.

Image: housecoast.com

It offers a highly satisfying option for those less concerned with extravagant design. Despite its simple aesthetics, the Camry impresses with its reliability and has firmly established itself in the automotive world, where it is synonymous with longevity and efficiency.

Toyota 4 Runner

The origins of the Trail Blazer, Trekker, and Wolverine models, from which the 4Runner later emerged, trace back to the Toyota Hilux pickup. These vehicles were already renowned as reliable off-roaders, but the 4Runner stands out as a particularly compact SUV and enjoys great popularity among off-road enthusiasts.

Image: zombdrive.com

In addition to its off-road capabilities, it distinguishes itself with a variety of available engines that deliver the appropriate torque and ensure longevity in rugged terrain. Particularly in the USA, this model, manufactured in both the Aichi Prefecture and Hamura, is extremely popular.

Lincoln Town Car

The Lincoln Town Car, a legend in Lincoln’s lineup, debuted in 1981 and gained popularity in the USA for its stylish appearance and economic appeal. Sharing design similarities with the renowned Ford Crown Victoria, it offers comparable driving characteristics but with a touch of luxury.

Image: alltimelimousine.com

For 13 years, the unchanged 4.6-liter V8 engine has proven to be a favorite among Americans, rendering adjustments unnecessary. The Lincoln Town Car remains a trusted companion, living up to its reputation as a symbol of status and elegance.

Nissan Titan XD

Since its debut in 2004, the Titan has secured a prominent position in the market. It shares its platform with the Nissan Armada and the Infiniti QX, offering versatility with rear-wheel drive for urban areas or all-wheel drive for off-road adventures.

Image: housecoast.com

The Cummins diesel engines epitomize durability, longevity, and reliability. While a powerful 5.6-liter V8 gasoline engine comes standard, the Cummins 5.0-liter turbodiesel V8 is highly recommended. The only drawback is that the Titan is exclusively available in North America, making it a top choice for drivers in this region.

Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD

On the endless roads of America, the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD, a pickup truck by General Motors, is a common sight, ranking just behind the Ford F-Series. Chevrolet and Ford have been competing in this category for years. The Silverado is renowned for its longevity and robustness, evident from its often six-digit odometer readings.

Image: housecoast.com

Its remarkable reliability is often imperceptible to its drivers. Those familiar with the F-250 Super Duty can anticipate what to expect from the Silverado. This model is just one of many pickups offered by Chevrolet and provides a dependable option for discerning users.

Honda Odyssey

Since 1994, the Honda Odyssey has been a familiar sight on the roads. The first generation of this minivan was based on the Honda Accord and could optionally be equipped with all-wheel drive. In addition to the well-known 2.2-liter and 2.3-liter gasoline engines in Europe, a powerful 3.0-liter V6 gasoline engine J30A was also available.

Image: amp.businessinsider.com

These engines effortlessly handle more than 400,000 kilometers without significant failures. The Odyssey’s robustness extends not only to the engine but also to the transmission and overall mechanics. Although the design may not appeal to everyone’s taste, the Odyssey is a wise investment for those looking to safely transport their family from A to B.

Acura RDX

The sales figures of this crossover SUV speak volumes. Powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 279 horsepower, it boasts a robust powertrain ideal for navigating a demanding daily routine. With regular maintenance, reaching 400,000 kilometers is easily achievable.

Image: science-a2z.com

The built-in 6-speed automatic transmission contributes to its impressive longevity. The Acura MDX, produced in Marysville, is the larger sibling of the Acura RDX. While it may bear a resemblance to the Honda CR-V externally, its interior is entirely different.

Chevrolet Impala

He’s as elegant as his namesake and has been a classic since his production in 1958. Following the retirement of the Bel Air in 1976, the Chevrolet Impala took the lead at the automaker. Timeless, down-to-earth, and pleasing to the eye, it’s a true lifelong companion.

Image: i1.wp.com/thirdauto.com

However, to maximize its potential, consider opting for the 3.6-liter DOHC V6 engine with 305 horsepower and the standard ECOTEC 2.5-liter DOHC 4-cylinder. Additionally, it features a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Toyota Corolla

The Corolla model encompasses a variety of different vehicles from Toyota. It has transitioned from the lower mid-range to the compact class.

Image: nsamed.info

The small sedan has often surpassed the 400,000-kilometer mark in Japan and is hailed as the long-distance champion there. The engines, continuously improved since 1989, naturally benefit today’s Corolla.

Honda Pilot

In North America, it’s among the best-selling vehicles in its class, and there are several reasons for that. Unlike many other luxury SUVs, the Pilot is highly reliable, especially in terms of longevity and maximum mileage.

Image: assets.trucktrend.com

Initially introduced as a five-door SUV and successor to the less successful Honda Passport, the Pilot has proven itself. While the final verdict is pending, the latest model appears promising in terms of its performance capabilities.

Audi Allroad

In 2016, the second generation of the Audi A4 was showcased at the North American Auto Show as the off-road version of the Audi A4 Avant. This generation was introduced to the market in spring 2009 and has undergone continuous visual enhancements.

Image: st.motortrend.com

Similar to the VW Passat, the Audi Allroad has proven to be highly durable. With regular maintenance, it achieves maximum mileage with nearly every engine option.

Scion xB

Originally intended to appeal to a younger demographic, the Toyota Scion was a pilot project for the Japanese market in 1997, targeting dealerships in the USA, Canada, and some parts of the Middle East.

Image: Imago / ZUMA Wire

This model evokes mixed reactions—while many love it, others can’t stand it. If one were to believe the numerous satisfied customers, Toyota has created a highly reliable car here, capable of easily surpassing 400,000 kilometers.

Nissan Patrol

Although manufactured since the early 1950s, this SUV didn’t acquire its name until the 1960s. In Japan, it was later marketed as the Nissan Safari. The classic model came in various wheelbase lengths.

Image: science-a2z.com

Its primary rival is the Toyota Land Cruiser. Both are excellently crafted, highly capable off-road, and feature similar engines. However, the Nissan Patrol is not your typical urban Jeep; it’s a rugged SUV built to tackle any terrain with ease.

GMC Sierra 2500HD

GMC, a subsidiary of American automaker General Motors, is a must-have for those seeking attention not only in the city but also relying on a truck capable of handling heavy loads.

Image: media.baumpub.com

Technically akin to the Chevrolet Silverado, it was introduced in 1975. The GMC Truck has solidified its status as an institution in the USA with its robust body and powerful engine, making it the ideal companion for tough guys.

Mazda 6

Its engine performs like that of a sports car, while the seating experience resembles that of a comfortable sedan. Stepping on the gas pedal brings joy and ensures safety simultaneously.

Toyota Tacoma

The second generation of the Toyota Tacoma was crowned “Truck of the Year” by Motor Trend magazine. Named after the city of Tacoma in Washington state, this model has been continuously developed since 1996. It excels in off-road capability and payload, though it falls slightly behind competitors in overall performance and interior features. Nevertheless, it remains solid and dependable, with low fuel consumption.

Image: gannett-cdn.com

Equipped with a standard 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine producing 180 lb-ft of torque, it comes with a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Optionally available is a 3.5-liter V6 (265 lb-ft) with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. With the appropriate setup, it can carry up to 660 kg. For those seeking more adventure, there’s a high-performance suspension and the elegant TRD Pro package.

Ford F-250 Super Duty

Until 2014, Ford’s F-Series had been America’s best-selling vehicle for 32 years. In 2010, it ranked second globally, with 34 million units produced, just behind the Toyota Corolla. The F-Series encompasses buses, trucks, and pickups.

Image: momentcar.com

The F-250 Super Duty is exceptionally rugged and powerful, tailored for heavy loads. Its frames and engines are built to withstand rigorous daily use, often surpassing 400,000 kilometers on the odometer. It’s no wonder why, even after 13 generations, we still have a fondness for this vehicle.

Toyota Sequoia

The Sequoia, part of Toyota’s SUV lineup, stands out as the largest in size. While slightly larger than the Land Cruiser, it boasts more cargo space behind the rear seats and accommodates eight passengers instead of seven. Positioned between the smaller 4Runner and the Land Cruiser in terms of pricing, it upholds Toyota’s renowned durability and reliability.

Image: pictures.dealer.com

Despite its robust 5.7-liter V8 engine paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, capable of enduring tough conditions with minimal maintenance, its size leads to higher fuel consumption. Nevertheless, it easily exceeds the 400,000-kilometer mark. Remarkably, this model is manufactured in Princeton, Indiana.

Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD

The Chevrolet Silverado embodies the classic American pickup truck design, offering a spacious cabin with room for a second row of seating and an open cargo bed supported by a sturdy ladder frame. Available in both two-door and four-door configurations, it effortlessly surpasses the 400,000-kilometer mark with its robust Duramax® 6.6L turbo-diesel V engine.

Image: IMAGO / Dreamstime

While the Silverado 3500HD comes equipped with the fuel-thirsty Vortec® 6.0L gasoline V8 as standard, it still impresses with its reliability and remains a favored choice among those seeking a dependable heavy-duty pickup truck.

Honda Civic

The Honda Civic, introduced in 1972, is now in its tenth iteration. With over 18.5 million units sold globally, it ranks sixth among the best-selling cars in history. While coupes are made in the USA, sedans and hatchbacks are produced in the UK.

Image: housecoast.com

Like the Corolla, the Civic is renowned for its longevity and fuel efficiency, making it a preferred choice for practical-minded owners seeking dependable transportation. Its robust engine and versatility are appreciated by enthusiasts. Choosing a pre-owned Civic is a sensible move, offering reliability and performance for discerning buyers.

Ford F-150

Introduced more than half a century ago, in 1948, this model hit the market in three different versions. Later, the current 13th generation of the pickup was introduced. For many farmers and small businesses, the Ford F-150 is a reliable companion.

Image: d1tr1z57agf4qv.cloudfront.net

It has been the best-selling vehicle in North America for years and is considered an essential institution there. Knowledge of its reliability has been passed down from generation to generation, and even today, this vehicle easily covers hundreds of kilometers per day. Of course, proper maintenance is essential for this.

Chevrolet Equinox

Despite its length of 4.80 meters, General Motors markets the Equinox as a compact SUV. This is perhaps due to its practical and well-insulated cabin. It leaves nothing to be desired in terms of both interior features and engine performance. Under the hood hides one of three turbo engines. The 170-horsepower 1.5-liter and the 137-horsepower 1.6-liter diesel come with a six-speed automatic, while the slightly more luxurious 252-horsepower 2.0-liter engine boasts nine gears.

Image a3.dealerimages.dealereprocess.com

As mentioned earlier, the Equinox can also compete with other sedans in terms of interior features. The standard version comes with a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Those who prefer a larger screen can also opt for an 8-inch display, a lane-keeping assist, or an automated emergency brake. The only downside: the Equinox, which debuted in 2005, is only available in North America.

Saab 9000

This model exemplifies the strength of the Swedish automotive industry. Although it is no longer in production, it enjoyed its heyday in the 1980s and 1990s. Its design may be subject to debate, but this car is as robust as an elephant and remains a loyal companion. The Saab 9000 began development as early as 1979 but was not introduced to the American market until 1985.

Image: hips.hearstapps.com

It was built on the Tipo Quattro platform by Fiat, which was shared with three other Fiat models. It offers a selection of powerful engines. Many may find it familiar: Some parts of the Saab 9000’s body are identical to those of the Lancia Thema, Alfa Romeo 164, and Fiat Croma models.

Toyota Land Cruiser

This off-road vehicle enjoys great popularity, especially in Africa, Latin America, and some Arab countries. Since its introduction to the market in 1951, the vehicle has been offered in many different variants. It is noteworthy that the Land Cruiser, along with the Hilux, were the first vehicles to reach the North Pole.

Image: kreiszeitung.de

Of course, some modifications had to be made to the chassis, engine, and wheels for this purpose. Outside the USA, it is considered one of the most durable off-road vehicles available. It is equipped with excellent AWD systems and engines that are as rugged as a tank, particularly the 4.2-liter diesel engines. It is particularly well-suited for bush excursions, safaris, or deployments in war zones.

Toyota Prius

For those fluent in Latin, the term “prius” signifies “first,” and this perfectly describes the Toyota Prius, a true trailblazer. Excelling in various aspects, notably its gasoline/electric hybrid drive variant, it holds the title of the most popular hybrid car globally. In Japan, the initial generation hit the market in late 1997, positioned within the compact car category.

Image: IMAGO / ZUMA Press

However, it’s worth noting that compared to the Camry, its battery may require more frequent replacement before the engine’s failure. Despite this, the hybrid engine has demonstrated its reliability, warranting a clear recommendation.

VW Golf 4 TDI

He’s a true classic, as production started back in 1974, and by 2019, it had reached its 8th generation with over 35 million cars sold. It caters to all demographics, from young to old, appealing to mechanics, teachers, and housewives alike.

Image: deviantart

Many enthusiasts still claim that the standard 1.9-liter TDI engine is one of the best ever produced by Volkswagen. Due to their robustness, turbocharged diesel engines, it’s still worth buying a used car even if it has many miles on the clock.

Toyota Sienna

This model has been exclusively produced for the American market since 1997 and built on the revamped platform of the Camry. However, its front-wheel drive was designed more conventionally compared to its predecessor.

Image: pw4.dreams-travel.com/

As a van, it was particularly designed for long-distance travel, which is why it is still widely used by many taxi companies as a large-capacity taxi to this day. In contrast to its competitors, it boasts an outstanding 4WD system and is as robust as one would expect from a long-haul vehicle.

Toyota Highlander

The Highlander is available for purchase in Japan, Australia, and the USA. Yet, it goes by the name Toyota Kluger in Australia, as the Hyundai Terracan is marketed as the Highlander there.

Image: d1tr1z57agf4qv.cloudfront.net

It made its international debut at the New York International Auto Show in 2000. Over time, various enhancements have been made, resulting in significantly increased interior space. However, it retains its robust 3.5-liter V6 engine, which sets it apart from its rivals in the SUV segment.

Ford Taurus

Since its debut in 1986, the Taurus has seen seven generations of upgrades. In 2007, a wagon variant was introduced alongside the sedan. From the 5th generation onward, it’s been categorized as a full-size vehicle, though it’s considered mid-size in the US. The 3.5-liter V6 engine boasting 288 horsepower effortlessly surpasses the 400,000-kilometer mark.

Image: static.cargurus.com

Thus, opting for the Eco mode with the 2-liter EcoBoost inline-four or the 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost of the SHO might be wiser. The Taurus’s endurance is further bolstered by its 6-speed automatic transmission. Movie buffs may recognize the Taurus, as it’s often the go-to vehicle for many agencies, including the FBI. If that doesn’t convince you…

Subaru Legacy

The Subaru midsize vehicle has been in production since 1989. Renowned for their performance and resilience, Subaru’s boxer engines power the Legacy, which also boasts all-wheel drive capabilities. While the latest 6th version is not available in Germany, the Legacy offers a range of engine options from a 76 kW (1.8-liter four-cylinder introduced in 1989) to a 195 kW/265 PS (2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder since 2009).

Image: telegraf.com.ua

Additionally, it comes with either a 2.5 or 3.6-liter engine paired with a Lineartronic® CVT transmission. Buyers have the choice between a sedan or wagon (station wagon) body style to suit their preferences.

Hyundai Elantra

99/100

Introduced in 2000, the Hyundai Elantra succeeded the Hyundai Lantra in the midsize car category. Due to potential confusion with Lotus Cars’ Elan model, which was distinct from the Elantra, previous generations in Europe were named Lantra. Despite production of the Lantra ending in 1992, the name endured. It wasn’t until 1996, when Hyundai transferred the Elan production line to its competitor Kia, that the European version adopted the Elantra name in 2000.

Image: media.asrekhodro.com/

Despite facing competition from numerous models in its class, this compact car offers spacious interiors, comfortable seating, and ample trunk space. It is available in various configurations, including the Elantra GT hatchback, which provides increased cargo space and a more powerful engine. The 2018 iteration of this model is particularly renowned for its durability.

Jeep Wrangler

Both its predecessor, the Jeep CJ, and the Wrangler trace their roots back to the Willys MB model. Originally, the Willys MB was a military vehicle produced by Willys-Overland for the American government during World War II. To meet modern expectations of an off-road vehicle, this icon underwent modernization.

Image: science-a2z.com

For instance, the windshield was slightly angled, while retaining the classic profile of the model. What makes it so special is that it can be driven without doors and a roof. The vehicle impresses with its versatility and robustness.

Ford Crown Victoria

92/100

This is perhaps the most famous police car in the world. However, it’s not just popular for its cool style, but primarily for its durability. This model, which is also very popular in the Middle East, was offered on the North American market as a full-size car from 1992 to 2011.

Image: science-a2z.com

The Crown Victoria easily surpasses the 500,000-kilometer mark and often continues to be used as a taxi after retiring from police duty. It’s simply indestructible.

Dodge Ram Cummins

Dodge and Cummins joined forces to produce a pickup truck, resulting in a resounding success. Introduced as part of the Dodge D-Series by Chrysler in 1981, the Dodge Ram quickly became a top-seller, especially in the USA and Canada, incorporating the best of both brands. However, by the 1990s, Dodge pickups in the Midwest were perceived as rather unremarkable, prompting a redesign in 1994.

Image: daily-stuff.com

This new series gave the pickup a fresh image, featuring powerful engines reflected in its large, distinctive grille, which became its hallmark. The latest Dodge Ram models offer two versions of the Cummins engine: the 5.9-liter turbocharged inline-six and the newer 6.7-liter engine, both delivering outstanding performance and impressive torque.

Mercedes-Benz E -Klasse W124

The E-Class W124 was introduced by Daimler-Benz in 1984 as the “Upper Middle Class” at market launch. However, when the nomenclature of passenger cars changed in 1993, the W124 continued to be sold as the E-Class until 1997.

Image: Imago / Pond5

With this model, Mercedes introduced the new version of the predecessor W123’s diesel engines to the market. This excellent engine guarantees a long lifespan, and with regular maintenance, it easily surpasses 400,000 kilometers.
